   I'm a writer, and a welder. Surprisingly there's a lot of similarities between writing and high pressure welding.

   In both instances you start in the dark, usually in some uncomfortable position. Next you have to strike an arc and succeed in working that spark into places you can barely see. After you are finished laying the work down, you use a pick hammer to remove any slag that mars your product. Finally you brush away at the work so that it gleams.

   Then some guy you don't like, comes along and says: "It's not that good."
